The objects of our investigations are plant collections of the O.V. Fomin Botanical Garden both greenhouses and open-ground plots which have been collected since 1839. Nowadays they count about 9000 species of vascular plants from which about 4200 species are tropical and subtropical plants. Also we carry out researches of plants, especially rare and endangered, in nature conditions and herbarium (acronym – KWHU) which has about 80000 specimens of vascular plants, mosses, algae, lichens and fungi.
Main aim of our studying is development of effective methods of ex situ and in situ plant conservation. We are involved in floristic, geobotanical, ecological, anatomical, morphological, physiological, genetic and biochemical investigations of plants for achievement of it.
For example, stuff of our laboratory (1 Doctor of Sciences and 7 PhD) takes part in:
a) studying of adaptation process to arid conditions during ontogenesis of plants from different ecological groups;
b) classification of life-form of succulents;
c) creation and modernization of plant reproduction approaches;
d) solution of different taxonomical questions;
e) creation of new protected territories of different levels from local reserves till National Natural Parks;
f) carrying out experiments for reintroduction and repatriation of some rare species of plants in nature;
g) researching of state and structure of populations both birds and plants.
Future Projects and Goals
- Monograph about long-term results of introduction of succulent plants in greenhouses conditions;
- participation in preparation of a identification guide of natural flora of Ukraine;
- barcoding of Ukrainian grasses;
- monographic investigation of bulb plants of nature flora of Ukraine;
- participation in preparation of the next edition of the Red Data Book of Ukraine;
- participation in forming the Emerald Network in Ukraine;
- development of the National Strategy for Plant Conservation which will be accepted on government level in Ukraine;
- creation in vitro collection of rare and endangered plants;
- digitalization of herbarium.
