Group leader Prof. Dr. Volodymyr Aushev
I have published 120 scientific papers in reviewed journals (including European Physical Journal C, Nuclear Physics B, Physics Letters B, Journal of High Energy Physics, Physical Review D, Physical Review Letters) in high energy physics and about 30 papers in nuclear physics. Citations per paper (average): 33.4.
The principal focus of the high energy elementary particle physics group is the study of nature at the very high energies. The group is a part of the department of nuclear physics of the Taras Shevcehnko National university and consists of three faculty members Volodymyr Aushev, Igor Kadenko and Yuriy Onishchuk as well as postdocs, PhDs and students. Our group is active in many areas of experimental physics research and detector development. We are members of international collaborations in Europe, the United States, and Japan.
The goal of high energy physics is to understand what are the most fundamental constituents of matter and how these elementary particles interact. It has also important implications for cosmology.
The experimentalists from our group participate in a number of collaborative research studies. Members of our group faculty, post-docs and graduate students continue to contribute to a number of precision measurements working on the following projects: analysis of data taken by the recently completed D0 experiment at Fermilab, the Belle experiment at KEK and the ZEUS experiment at DESY. We write analysis software, help build detector components, and look for various process signatures in the data (e.g., multi-parton interactions, top quark physics, heavy flavour physics, top quark mass etc.). The group is very active in the development of next generation of experiments in elementary particle physics. The high energy group is also involved in major education outreach activities, aimed at spreading an interest in physics and science to kids, and high school students. The mentoring of undergraduates, graduate students and post-doctoral researchers is a responsibility that I take very seriously. My courses of lectures at the University: “High energy physics”, “Nuclear astrophysics”, “Dark matter”, “Neutrino physics”, “Modern experiment in high energy physics”.
1978-1994: was involved in nuclear spin physics studies at low energies on cyclotrons and development of next generation of experiments with sources of polarized protons and ions. PhD thesis was devoted to the measurement of the polarized recoil β-active nuclei from nuclear
reactions. We developed metal micro-strip detectors based on the secondary electron emission for the on-line beam profile monitoring and the radiation flow monitoring. The technology has been extended for monitoring distribution of intense monochromatic X-rays; was applied for X-rays at HASYLAB as well as for charge particle beams (including separate luminosity monitoring at HERA-B for up to 8 target operated simultaneously in the HERA proton beam hallo). I have about 30 publications in nuclear physics.
1994-2005: Member of the HERA-B Collaboration at HERA (DESY, Germany).
of the international HERA-B collaboration at the HERA accelerator. Goal of the experiment: study of the production and decay of heavy quarks in hadronic interactions.
Participation in the data taking of the HERA-B experiment and the physics analysis of the data. Member of the Minimum Bias physics analysis group, the Charmonium physics analysis group and convener of the Luminosity group. I have 19 joint papers in reviewed journals .
1997-2002: LHCb Collaboration at CERN . Participation in development of the LHCb online system, development Radiation monitoring system for the LHCb Inner Tracker. There are 3 my publications devoted to these topics.
2005 – present: Member of the ZEUS Collaboration at HERA (DESY, Germany). Physics coordinator of the Heavy Flavour group and joined physics analysis group. The Heavy Flavour group focuses on the production of charm and beauty quarks at HERA. The processes by which these heavy quarks are produced give fundamental insights into QCD and the structure of the proton and photon. We measure charm and beauty cross-sections over a wide range of Bjorken x and Q2 using heavy mesons (particles that contain heavy quarks) or leptons (such as electrons and muons) from the weak decay of the heavy quark. Group leader of the Kyiv group participating in the ZEUS experiment. I have published 81 papers in the ZEUS experiment.
Since 2010 up to present: Member of the DØ Collaboration at Tevatron, the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab, USA). The DØ experiment consists of a worldwide collaboration of scientists conducting research on the fundamental nature of matter. The experiment is a test of the Standard Model of particle physics. The research is focused on precise studies of interactions of protons and antiprotons at the highest available energies. It involves an intense search for subatomic clues that reveal the character of the building blocks of the universe. Physicists of the DZero experiment have discovered top quark and was done the world's most precise single measurement of the top quark mass, which is a fundamental parameter of the standard model and other important studies; also was observed a new heavy particle, Ξb baryon, with a mass of 5.774 GeV/c2 which is made of a down, a strange and a bottom quark. It is the first observed baryon formed of quarks from all three families of matter. Its discovery and the measurement of its mass provide new understanding of how the strong nuclear force acts upon the quarks, the basic building blocks of matter. The 10 joint publications in reviewed journals were published.
Future Projects and Goals
We are actively involved in the development of next generation of experiments in elementary particle physics including neutrino experiments: WA105 at CERN and DUNE at Fermilab, USA as well as detector FCAL at DESY(Zeuthen), Germany for the future linear collider; participation in the Belle II experiment at the KEK (Japan) is the focal point of the Kyiv HEP group’s long-term research vision.
Since 2016: Collaborations DUNE and WA105 (at Fermilab USA and CERN). Our detector research and development targets innovative technology for neutrino experiments. This covers topics related to accelerator-based neutrino physics and neutrino astrophysics applications. We are involved in the WA105 experiment, which is currently being constructed at CERN. WA105 is a prototype for the proposed DUNE experiment and will both test new technology and provide test beam data to use in existing and future neutrino liquid argon experiments. The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a leading-edge, international experiment for neutrino science and proton decay studies. Discoveries over the past half-century have put neutrinos, the most abundant matter particles in the universe, in the spotlight for further research into several fundamental questions about the nature of matter and the evolution of the universe — questions that DUNE will seek to answer. Group leader of the Kyiv group participating in the DUNE and WA105 experiments.
Since 2016: Collaboration FCAL (at DESY-Zeuthe, Germany): The group is also involved in preliminary research and development for a possible future detector for International linear collider (ILC). FCAL is a worldwide detector Research&Development collaboration. About 70 physicists join their effort to develop the technologies of special calorimeters in the very forward region of future detectors at an e+e- collider. These calorimeters must be compact, precisely positioned and read out very fast. Since the radiation load in the very forward region is large sensors of unprecedented radiation hardness are needed. Group leader of the Kyiv group participating in the FCAL experiment.
Since 2013: Collaboration BELLE II (at KEK, Japan): The B-factory experiments observed the first large signals for CP violation (matter-antimatter asymmetries) in the B meson sector. These results demonstrated Kobayashi and Maskawa's hypothesis for the origin of the CP violation is correct and provided the experimental foundation for their 2008 Nobel Prize in Physics. Belle II, the first super B-Factory experiment, is designed to find New Physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. The SuperKEKB accelerator in Japan is designed to achieve with the highest peak luminosity. The Belle II experiment is designed to record data at SuperKEKB, with a performance similar or better than the previous B factory detectors. Group leader of the Kyiv group participating in the Belle experiment.
